[ THE CHALLENGE ] This project seeks to repair and restore the historic main entrance to the Old Library and simultaneously make it fully accessible to all users. Working closely with the Old Library Accessibility Committee Abacus carried out a careful study of both site and building, developed design alternatives, and subsequently prepared a cost effective schematic design and cost estimate.

[ THE RESPONSE ] The design combines three simple approaches: restoration of the entrance stairway and recessed entrance porch, a gently rising landscape path, and a light steel “bridge” that completes the accessible path without taking away from the view of the historic facade.
